Council Member Gale A. Brewer introduces Intro 1135, which proposes establishing a Wards Island affordable housing task force. She outlines the potential for affordable housing development on Wards Island, comparing it to the transformation of Welfare Island into Roosevelt Island. Brewer also acknowledges and thanks several interns working with the City Council.
- Brewer emphasizes the available land on Wards Island and its proximity to Randall's Island
- She mentions current uses of Wards Island, including a psychiatric hospital, homeless shelters, and New York State Police presence
- Brewer suggests the task force could lead to the development of affordable, permanent "Mitzelama lite" housing

Thank you.
1:25:32
I'm calling about intro 11:35.
1:25:35
It's a big idea to establish a Wards Island affordable housing task force.
1:25:40
I wanna thank council member Ayala for joining me.
1:25:43
So Warts Island is right next to Randall's Island for those of you who don't know it.
1:25:48
It has lots of land on it.
1:25:50
It is something that could be like, Welfare Island became Roosevelt Island with thanks to Ed Logue.
1:25:56
And there's no reason we can't do the same thing.
1:25:58
And it would take some years.
1:26:00
A city state task force, the state has their New York State Police there, and of course it has a very large psychiatric hospital.
1:26:07
Parks has materials there.
1:26:08
Odyssey House and Help USA have homeless shelters.
1:26:12
The fire department has a very small training program.
1:26:15
And of course, Randall's Island has wonderful, playing fields there.
1:26:20
So I am saying, I hope that you will join me in saying that if we want big ideas, that I think having a task force to talk about where we can have affordable, permanent, Mitzelama lite housing would be an example of something that the city council could be proud of initiating.
1:26:37
I also wanna thank wonderful interns, Jenna McCormick from Hunter College, Gregory Seawall from Maris College, Esther Amola from Hunter College, Tenay Odrago from Deerford Academy, thanks to Prep for Prep, Alex Pulsford from Binghamton University, Leonheim from the lab lab school and SYEP, and Zachary Harwane from Brooklyn Tech.
