Overwriting the mayor's veto and allowing intros 586aand549a to pass will make this city and our correctional facilities less safe.
0:48:04
I've spoken with numerous current or retired members of law enforcement about this subject, and the response was virtually all of them from all of them have been the same.
0:48:13
Intro 586 will needlessly tie down our already overstretched police department, and intro 549 will remove one of the last remaining tools that our corrections officers have to enforce rules within their facilities.
0:48:27
Both of these things equate to less safety.
0:48:31
Less safety for the average New Yorker on the street, less safety for our corrections officers and staff, and less safety from other inmates who can now be attacked at will.
0:48:40
With no repercussions or too low of a repercussion available to deter their silence.
0:48:46
I'm proudly voting no on this override I implore my colleagues to in the city council to do the same.
0:48:52
The public safety of our entire city is at risk, and right now, this is opportunity to prevent unnecessary injury or loss of life, losses which could be easily avoided if we vote down this override and allow our law enforcement to do their jobs as effectively as they possibly can.
0:49:07
Thank you for the time.
0:49:09
I vote no.
