Council Member Rita Joseph, a representative from Brooklyn and chair of the Committee on Education, shares her compelling personal story as a mother of four black young men and her professional experiences as an educator. She highlights the direct impact of racial profiling on her family, the trauma experienced by youth in New York, and the broader implications for black and brown communities. Joseph emphasizes the How Many Stops Acts' importance in ensuring accountability and transparency within the NYPD, criticizes Mayor Adams for his misleading public stance, and asserts the council's dedication to policies enhancing public safety and justice. Her firm stand for accountability and her vote reflect a commitment to New Yorkers and the betterment of communities disproportionately affected by policing practices.

I am a council member from Brooklyn, also the chair committee on education and the council.
1:16:56
But more importantly, I am a mother of 4 black young men.
1:17:01
The real life experiences of everyday New Yorkers are why we are here today.
1:17:06
And as a mom dealt with my son being stopped by New York NYPD, my son was racially profiled in question, But what I know for certain is that my story is too familiar around the city.
1:17:18
As an educator in our public school system for over 2 decades, I know the trauma of our youth face after horrific encounters with law enforcement does not go away.
1:17:27
More than ever, transparency and accountability is needed especially for black for young black and brown New Yorkers who've been victim of racial profile profiling.
1:17:37
The how many stop acts is about accountability and transparency.
1:17:41
And if the Adams administration says they believe in that, to how many stop acts should not be an issue.
1:17:48
Instead mayor Adams is simply misleading the public, but this council remained committed.
1:17:53
To honest dialogue about policies that can make us safer.
1:17:57
When we have public safety data, it will make New Yorkers and their communities much safer.
1:18:03
We owe it to New Yorkers, especially those who have been impacted by the most to stand on the right and truthful side of history.
1:18:10
The moment is now for us to deliver for New Yorkers who have been forgotten far so far too long.
1:18:17
And this council remain firm and standing up for what is right.
1:18:21
Today, I stand for my students and my 4 boys in Flatbush.
1:18:26
So I vote I on all.
