Council Member Carlina Rivera asks Dennis Walcott, President of the Queens Public Library, about effective strategies for raising awareness and spreading the word on issues related to book banning and fostering open discussions. Dennis Walcott highlights the importance of raising issues, having open discussions, and drawing attention to books other countries or cities want to ban. He suggests that dialogues and programs like those in Brooklyn, New York, and Queens can raise awareness and make people more aware of what's happening outside of New York City, emphasizing the role of libraries in facilitating these discussions.

Strategies you feel have been more effective than anything that we can help spread the word?

I I think the raising of the issue, the open discussion around the issue, the more we can really indicate the types of books that other countries or all the cities and locales want to ban.

It's very helpful to make people think and say, really, this is going on.

And as a result of that, I think it just brings added attention to the discussion, but any type of dialogue that we can have, and I think any type of program like the excellent programs that Brooklyn and New York are doing, and the things that we're doing, I think makes it more aware makes people more aware of what's happening outside of New York City.
