Council Member Althea Stevens inquires about the percentage of juvenile interrogations conducted with and without the presence of parents or guardians. The NYPD representative elaborates on challenges accessing specific data due to the enterprise case management system's limitations for data aggregation. While acknowledging the significance of tracking such information, the NYPD commits to exploring methods to readily obtain this data. Stevens emphasizes the importance of understanding how many youths interact with authorities unsupervised and urges the development of systems to easily retrieve this information.

The next question I have is just around it was said that juveniles that are interrogate interrogated that they're usually a parent or a a guardian or someone are are usually there.
1:10:18
What percentage of juveniles got being interrogated are done with parents and what's the percentage without parents or guardians or adults.
Josh Levin
1:10:28
So we wanted to look into this.
1:10:30
I went back to the system we have, which is the enterprise case management system.
1:10:34
Ultimately, it was originally designed as a case management system, not as like a data aggregation technology.
1:10:40
So I tried to run that or at least I had the people try to run that and it's not easily data mined.
1:10:45
There's no way to just be like, boop, like an Excel and press a button and it spits out every time a parent or guardian is present.
1:10:51
But here's what I can tell you.
1:10:53
That is memorialized.
1:10:55
It is annotated in different places inside the case.
1:10:59
It's just not something where we can go click any clack and outspits the numbers.
1:11:02
We don't
Althea Stevens
1:11:02
think that this is important information to be tracking because I think it is important.
1:11:06
Us to know how many young people are having conversations with authorities without an adult supervision there and a guardian.
1:11:12
So if isn't something we're tracking.
1:11:14
I think that we need to move in that direction, and we should be able to go and click a button and get that information.
Josh Levin
1:11:19
I have no dispute with that whatsoever.
1:11:21
I would love to in a world where anytime in in preparation for this, I would love to hit boop boop and get it.
1:11:27
So that's certainly something we can look into.
1:11:28
But again, just for the record, I don't even need your time, but it is memorialized.
1:11:32
It's just not in an easy leave zone.
Althea Stevens
1:11:34
No.
1:11:34
I hear what you're saying.
1:11:34
No.
1:11:35
I know.
1:11:35
I understand.
1:11:35
You're just saying, like, it's not as easy to aggregate, but I think that that's something we need to get to a place where we are are aggregating at because We know that young people who've come into custody and been in contact with authorities are much more likely to be cohorts.
