Is there a model being created to create pathways for high school freshmen, similar to Fresno's, in NYC public schools?

The NYC Public Schools aim to ensure students receive the right message at critical transitions, similar to Fresno's model, but with a broader communication strategy.
- Initiatives start with the kindergarten 529 savings plan, emphasizing long-term planning for students.
- The CUNY and SUNY welcome letter initiatives target 12th graders, promoting affirmation and motivation.
- The office of student pathways focuses on key transitions, like entering middle school or high school, to support decision-making about future education and career opportunities.
- Future communications planning will continue to collaborate with CUNY, SUNY, and other partners to ensure timely and supportive messaging for students and families.

Are you all I was also encouraged by the testimony from the representative, from Fresno, and I read in the committee report about how, you know, it's really the first of it.
1:20:17
If it's kind that is creating pathways for high school freshmen.
1:20:22
I'm curious if that is a similar model that we are looking at here primarily because from what I understand, the letters were sent to students that were already on path to graduate, which is great.
1:20:37
But I'm I'm often concerned about the folks that that are not, and and I'm wondering if the incentive of college being a prospect 4 years from now serves as an incentive to to be on track to graduate on time.
1:20:50
So is that all something that you are looking at?

I can start.
1:20:55
That's a wonderful question.
1:20:56
It's one that we think about often because out of our office, we start with the kindergarten 529 savings plan, like Mhmm.
1:21:03
From the office of student pathways, there's a lot of intentionality behind these particular initiatives.
1:21:09
This CUNY welcome letter initiative was happening at the same time is the SUNY welcome letter.
1:21:14
So the intentionality is, of course, at a critical moment, like 12th grade, we need to ensure the right message.
1:21:19
You know, reaches a student with affirmation at the right time.
1:21:24
We already have a lot of large scale messaging the 529 plan and are thinking about, like, as we continue to develop NY CPS' communication, how are we thinking about all the key transitions and moments when a family can make a decision, transitioning into middle school, transitioning into high school, transitioning to high school, and understanding the future ready career connected learning programs and what type of early college opportunities they'll have through that program.
1:21:48
So it is it is this testimony is about the the welcome letter specifically, but wanna acknowledge and and affirm everything that you're naming in terms of, like, a longer trajectory and, like, what's the right message that should reach a student family member at the at the right time for the decisions they make about the future is very much a part of the the communications planning we're doing as an office and and look forward to continuing with CUNY and SunY and our other hybrid partners.
