City University of New York's recruitment strategy evolves from focusing on former CUNY students to targeting all interested individuals, and highlights a partnership with non-profits. Transportation costs are identified as a significant barrier for students.
- In the first year, the focus was on students who started at CUNY but did not complete their education.
- The strategy expanded in the second year to include anyone interested in pursuing or completing their education, utilizing geo mapping data.
- A partnership with non-profits is in place to assist their employees in pursuing education.
- The importance of supporting students beyond recruitment, aiming for their graduation and job placement, is emphasized.
- Transportation costs, particularly the price of MetroCards, are discussed as a major barrier for student retention, with existing support programs like half-priced MetroCards for lower-income students being highlighted.

What do you do your recruitment?
1:56:19
Is it just for students who left the system and came back, or are you in partnership with District 79 as well to do equipment.
Reine Sarmiento
1:56:28
In year 1, it was to be able to look at students who started at CUNY and didn't finish.
1:56:38
In year 2, it was everyone.
1:56:41
So whether or not they attended a CUNY institution or not, we have geo mapping data that identifies students who want to pursue or complete their education.
1:56:54
So we're focusing on that and also working with nonprofits to be able to provide a service to their employees as well.
1:57:08
And would love to be back to be able to talk about CUNY Reconnect and some of the other initiatives to enhance retention because it's not enough to just recruit them, but our obligation to CUNY is for them to be able to to graduate and find find jobs?
Rita Joseph
1:57:26
Absolutely.
1:57:27
And whatever the barriers are, I know MetroCard has been a big a big thing.
1:57:30
Are you guys promoting fear fears on campus?
1:57:33
The students to apply for Fairfield.
1:57:34
The council funds this program where lower income students can apply in their their metro cards at half price.
1:57:41
So you should be promoting those things on campus.
1:57:43
That's a barrier.
1:57:44
Transportation is a huge barrier.
1:57:45
When I meet with students in college or in high in college, especially in college, that's a that's a barrier.
1:57:50
If we can remove that.
1:57:52
That that should be also a game changer in in terms of how we retain our students.
Reine Sarmiento
1:57:56
Yeah.
1:57:56
It's very much appreciated in our ASAP and ACE programs.
1:58:01
The incentive they look forward to is their metro card.
1:58:05
And so we know the value of that in in transportation for our students.
1:58:11
Absolutely.
