The New York City Department for the Aging outlines initiatives to combat anti-Asian violence and support elder safety, including community conversations, elder justice programs, and NYPD collaboration.

  • The department emphasizes cultural competency and the creation of safe spaces in centers without asking for background or immigration status.
  • Elder justice programs are available for victims of crimes, providing referrals to support services.
  • A collaboration with the NYPD includes assigning an older adult liaison in every precinct, trained to address the needs of older victims.
  • Community conversations among providers are organized to address and mitigate violence against Asians.

Can you share what the agency is doing to combat anti Asian violence?
0:44:03
We know that Seniors are doubly, triply being impacted by anti Asian hate, and it is really hard to to see our aging community bear the brunt of these attacks.
0:44:18
Would love to hear what the what the agency and our mayor's plans are to combat and reduce the attacks.
0:44:26
And then I know that there are more than 300 older adult centers.
0:44:31
How do you get our aging community into these centers?
0:44:35
What does the outreach look like?
0:44:36
Thank you so much.
Anya Herasme
0:44:37
Sure.
0:44:38
So we're very so beyond cultural competency, obviously, which includes, of course, being sensitive to the needs of different older adults and and anytime any new issue arises such as the violence against Asians.
0:44:49
You know, we do our best to address those, and I think our providers do a very good job of having community conversations about those things.
0:44:56
And showing that we're these centers are a safe place for people to go.
0:45:01
We don't ask for people's background.
0:45:03
We don't ask for immigration status.
0:45:04
Nothing like that.
0:45:05
So we'd want people to feel comfortable in our programs.
0:45:08
We also have elder justice programs.
0:45:10
So if anybody is a victim of of a crime, We can serve them through another program.
0:45:17
We are referral to our elder justice providers, and we also recently began working with the NYPD to have an older adult liaison in every NYPD patient, which was very proud of.
0:45:28
So those are our NYPD officers who are trained to work with older adults and being sensitive to their needs.
0:45:34
So that's another way we can support any clients who are victims of abuse.
0:45:39
Or any kind of crime.
