Will current funding for class size reduction and teacher hiring be sufficient?

Current funding for class size reduction is inadequate for expanding compliance, and more budget allocation towards teacher hiring is considered.

  • Current funding will maintain, but not increase, compliance with class size caps.
  • Emma Vadehra indicates a significant portion of school budgets goes towards teacher salaries.
  • The approach aims to comply with current class size regulations rather than expand compliance.
  • There is a teacher shortage in New York City, and funding strategies are being adjusted to address this.
  • Schools are encouraged to allocate more budget towards hiring teachers to better comply with class size regulations.

New York City Public Schools in November 15 implementation report states that approximately $296,000,000 of ERC C4E funding is projected to be used in schools to support class as reduction this year.
2:01:06
In addition to the school at to the Sam 12 in the Sam 12 indicates that 36,360,000 in title 1, title 2a were allocated to schools to reduce class size according across elementary in FY 24 as well as 206,300,000 for the same purpose from school support supplement funds.
2:01:26
According to Sam 12, the ad up that adds up to $538,900,000 for class size reduction this year.
2:01:33
Will this funding you solely to maintain the class size in 40% currently in compliance with the cap?
2:01:38
Or this amount sufficient to bring additional classes into compliance?
2:01:41
If so, how many more classes can we expect to meet the compliance?
Emma Vadehra
2:01:49
So the dollars that are already being used for class size reduction, if they are maintained constant, we would not expect that they would increase.
2:01:57
Our compliance with the class size caps.
2:02:01
And and most of our dollars in school budgets, well well beyond those funding streams you named, of course go to teachers, which are a part of how we will both meet and eventually, you know, continue to comply.
Rita C. Joseph
2:02:13
And that will not impact hiring teachers versus bringing down the class size.
2:02:17
Right?
Emma Vadehra
2:02:21
I'm sorry.
2:02:21
Can you repeat that?
Rita C. Joseph
2:02:22
In terms of hiring educators.
2:02:25
We won't have a short we already have a shortage.
2:02:27
Right?
Venus Sze-Tsang
2:02:28
Yes.
Rita C. Joseph
2:02:28
We have a huge shortage in New York City, and that's been going on forever.
2:02:32
But this would not impact it if you start implementing more.
2:02:36
As as Shaker had I mean, council member Lee had talked about earlier.
Emma Vadehra
2:02:41
So one of the things we are looking at doing is asking schools to direct more of their school budgets towards hiring teachers.
2:02:50
So that would one of the reasons we would be aiming to do that, again, in our plan with UFT and CSA, would be to increase compliance with the law.
2:02:57
Is that is that Right.
