New York City Health and Hospitals (H+H) President and CEO Mitch Katz explains that residents have various options for mental health care, including health insurance coverage for outside counseling, anonymity in seeking help, and a peer support program called Helping Healers Heal.
- All residents have health insurance, enabling them to seek outside mental health care without H+H's knowledge.
- Residents have the freedom to discuss their mental health concerns directly with their program director or opt for complete privacy.
- The Helping Healers Heal program provides a third option, offering peer support as an alternative to supervisor or medical doctor consultation.
- H+H aims to provide multiple choices for mental health support, striving for a stigma-free environment.

How does HNH offer additional support to residents that may need outside counseling of request leave?
1:46:12
What additional options do residents have to seek mental health care needs?
Mitch Katz
1:46:17
Well, all of our residents do have health insurance.
1:46:21
So they would be able to seek care.
1:46:24
And and I think that's also important because that they can seek without us knowing it.
1:46:28
Anything about it, which is an important feature.
1:46:32
So, again, people differ.
1:46:33
Some people wanna go talk to their program director.
1:46:37
Some people their program director to have no idea that they're struggling, and our system should allow for both.
1:46:45
The we thought that the helping healers heal was nice because that's a 3rd model.
1:46:51
That's not your supervisor, that's not your doctor, that's your peer.
1:46:56
And sometimes a peer is the only one can who can assure you yes, I felt the same way.
1:47:02
Or yes, I I I feel bad in that kind of way as well.
1:47:09
So, again, our job is to provide as many choices as possible I'm sure there will always be people who take advantage and people who should take advantage but don't.
1:47:27
All we can do is try to make it as stigma free as possible.
