QUESTION

What resources are available through the Mayor's Office of Asylum Seeker Operations (OASO) for providers, and can providers use the space at help centers?

The Mayor's Office of Asylum Seeker Operations (OASO) does not provide direct resources but coordinates potential aids and offers limited space for provider use.

  • OASO lacks a contract, tax, or OTPS budget and hence does not directly offer resources to providers.
  • OASO facilitates coordination with other agencies and the philanthropic community for potential resource availability.
  • The federal clinic site at John J. is the only OASO location with available space for providers, helping expedite the federal government process for clients.
  • A new physical space for nonprofit providers with Aslan has been opened at 413 East 120th Street in East Harlem, but other centers do not offer space due to limitations.
  • Navigation sites, in partnership with Catholic Charities and other nonprofits, serve as a connection to Aslan and other services coordinated by MOIA and OASO.

What what resources does Owasso make available for providers engaged in this work?
Molly Schaeffer
2:09:33
So we don't have any contract.
2:09:34
Tax, and we don't have an OTPS budget.
2:09:38
And therefore, we make no resources available.
2:09:41
But what we do is coordinate on what agencies could potentially make available and the philanthropy community.
Alexa Avilés
2:09:49
Got it.
2:09:50
And in terms of can providers utilize the space at the help center?
Molly Schaeffer
2:09:55
So we actually, in our federal clinic, which is the only of our sites that actually has space right now.
2:10:02
It's at John J.
2:10:05
We had 2 different providers come in and be able to apply their clients in the federal government process too.
2:10:13
So we've made that space available to them to be able to utilize the federal government being there to get faster receipt notices.
Alexa Avilés
2:10:22
But at the other centers, they cannot.
Molly Schaeffer
2:10:24
At the other centers, they can't because we just don't have any base at the other centers.
Alexa Avilés
2:10:27
Got it.
Manuel Castro
2:10:29
Just wanna mention that through the outline, which Tom just described, we just open a space, a physical space where nonprofit providers with Aslan are working from.
Alexa Avilés
2:10:39
And where is that space?
Tom Tortorici
2:10:42
413 East 120th in East Harlem.
2:10:47
Appointments can be made through the sound seeker resource navigation sites, as well as the action of my sea hotline or the Moia legal support outline.
Alexa Avilés
2:10:59
Great.
2:11:00
Thank you.
Manuel Castro
2:11:00
Just just wanna clarify one point because sometimes language makes it a little weird right, to to understand that so our navigation sites were established in partnership with Catholic Charities And Nonprofit Organizations.
2:11:13
Okay.
2:11:15
Initially, we call them satellite sites to our navigation site.
2:11:19
There's some confusion there.
2:11:20
There's also satellite sites to the application help center.
2:11:25
But these what we used to call satellite sites, now they're called navigation sites, our nonprofit organizations spread throughout New York City that connect to our to Aslan and other services that we coordinate.
2:11:38
And so there's some overlap here with us Aslan's secret support.
2:11:42
The only difference is that we support asylum seekers who are not just in under our care, but already living in our communities.
Alexa Avilés
2:11:50
Got it.
2:11:52
Thank you.
2:11:52
Thank you for the clarity and the decoder ring on all the services.
2:11:57
I'll continue to read more guidance.
