The NYC Department of Education (DOE) outlines their communication strategy for families with limited English proficiency regarding remote learning through principals and superintendents, and by providing translated templates.

  • Communication is conducted through principals and superintendents to directly reach families.
  • Principals digest and superintendents digest are key tools utilized for communication.
  • Translated templates in nine languages are provided to schools for wider accessibility.
  • This approach is part of the DOE's efforts to ensure inclusivity and accessibility in its communications.
  • Specific instances of implementing these communication strategies include the day before February 12th and past preparations for simulating activities.

Kim or Danielle, can I help you come join?
0:39:17
Yes.
0:39:18
Absolutely.
0:39:18
So we we sort of from where we sit at Central, communicated through superintendents, through principals, to families in terms of our communications, and Kim, can you speak to that?
0:39:29
Kim is from our division of school leadership.
0:39:31
Sorry.
0:39:31
Thanks Kim.
0:39:32
Hi.
0:39:32
Good afternoon.
Kimberly Ramones
0:39:33
Good afternoon.
0:39:34
So we, as stated, we communicate through principles digest, which is it goes to all principles.
0:39:40
We also communicate through our superintendents digest, which goes to all superintendents for parents and families.
0:39:47
Whenever we're sending messaging, We will provide templates to schools that are translated in the 9 languages.
0:39:53
And so that is the way that we try to address families who have languages other than English.
0:39:58
So we rely on our schools, our messaging, our city wide messaging, and translated forms that we do provide.
0:40:05
We did that on the day before February 12th, and we also did that in the past when we are preparing to simulate activities.
