The New York City Department of Correction is expanding programs based on the population's request for more transitional planning, enrichment activities, and services.
- Transitional planning is identified as a critical need with a plan to expand the current footprint.
- Populace demands include higher frequency and variety in workforce development courses, such as barista training, OSHA certification, CPR, and barber shop training.
- Enrichment activities requested include conducting more frequent basketball tournaments, with about 5 basketball teams participating.
- The department is responding by increasing program frequencies and onboarding additional providers to meet these needs.

And taking a look at the some of the programming you just mentioned, and the work that's been done, the session sessions that you've had, and even some of the programs to come and publishing those programs.
2:32:44
Can you give us some examples of some of the biggest needs that you recognized within these from your population?
Francis Torres
2:32:56
Well, first of all, with 7 thank you so much, madam speaker.
2:33:01
With 70% of the population assigned to our care leaving our system to return to the communities.
2:33:10
Is really critical that we afford robust transitional planning.
2:33:16
To do so, we need to expand the footprint that we currently have.
Adrienne E. Adams
2:33:21
Is this what are these the results that you're projecting?
2:33:24
Are these are because my question was specifically what came from the population.
Francis Torres
2:33:29
Well, part of the population has asked for transitional planning.
2:33:33
Thank you so much.
2:33:35
The population also has asked for additional enrichment activities and services, and I'm glad to share with you few examples.
2:33:46
Pre pandemic, we used to transport our presence in custody to other facilities to conduct bus cable tournaments.
2:33:57
Believe it or not, after a number of years, last year, we have been able to do so.
2:34:04
We currently have approximately 5 basketball teams that on a frequency determined by our division of programs as well as security, we are able to do so.
2:34:18
We have increased our frequency on workforce development courses.
2:34:25
The population has brought to our attention that they want to have a larger frequency on how we offer our barista training.
2:34:36
They want a higher frequency on how we offer OSHA certification, CPR, and believe it or not, they want more barbershop training.
2:34:46
And so as we listen to their needs and their wants, we are quickly to turn around and address it.
2:34:54
We have onboarded more additional providers to target their needs.
2:35:01
Thank you.
Adrienne E. Adams
2:35:02
Thank you.
2:35:03
I'm gonna get back on track with the commissioner.
2:35:07
I I appreciated what you said very much.
2:35:09
Thank you.
