Council Member Brooks-Powers inquires about SBS's goals for increasing the number of Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) obtaining city contracts. SBS representatives explain their focus on tracking unique MWBE winners and their aim to increase this number year over year.

  • SBS reported 1,900 unique MWBE winners last year
  • The agency uses quarterly reporting to track MWBE contract wins, dollar values, and percentages in specific industry classifications
  • SBS emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities to as many of the nearly 11,000 certified MWBE firms as possible

First, in the PMMR, in the SBS section, the report list as a goal, quote unquote, increase the number of MWA's set up tain city contracts.
0:50:04
Can you get more specific about what that goal looks like in fiscal year 25?
0:50:09
What metrics is SBS using to measure this goal?
0:50:13
And how does SBS intend to accomplish this goal?

So I'll turn it over to executive deputy commissioner, Danish haute Gross, who has worked in the MWD space for many, many years.

And so, please,

I thank you for the question.

Turning on the mic.
0:50:32
Thank you, and good afternoon to everyone.

So we do report on, you know, we report on a quarterly basis on all of our work in the MWD program and the number of firms winning contracts and the dollar value of those contracts and the percentage of procurement in in particular industry.
0:50:54
Classifications that that represents.
0:50:57
But the unique number of MWBE winners, I think, is a very important metric.
0:51:02
We know that firms enter this program with the hope of growing their businesses through government procurement.
0:51:10
And we have nearly one 11,000 certified firms in the program right now.
0:51:15
So we want to be sure that as many MWA's as possible have an opportunity to present themselves as strong partners for the city, for the contracting needs that are covered by the programs goals and other programs.
0:51:32
So that that unique number of MWBE winners is a metric that helps us focus on the effectiveness of the program for the broad number of MWDEs in the program.
0:51:42
And we want to see MWDEs competing effectively and more MWA's having a chance at the opportunities that the program creates.
0:51:53
Last year, we had, I think, 1900 unique winners that we tracked in the program.
0:52:00
And so we want to increase that number year over year.
