NYC Aging collaborates with the Department of Youth and Community Development and the Department of Education to enhance intergenerational programming between older adults and young people, emphasizing community building through projects.

  • Pilot programs are established in 10 facilities that focus on community building instead of just storytelling.
  • The goal is to ease tensions and foster understanding between generations, considering both older adults and young people as key community members.
  • A grant application to the Robin Hood Foundation seeks to expand this work and identify intergenerational program models for replication.
  • Challenges include ensuring continued collaboration across relevant city agencies and securing adequate funding for program expansion.
  • The departments of Youth and Community Development, Education, and New York City Service are key partners, with aspirations to include more agencies in the future.

So what is NYC Aging doing to increase generational programming between older adults and young people.
1:09:13
You talked about this a little bit.
1:09:15
How is NYC aging working with other city agencies on this work?
Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez
1:09:19
We're working with NYCD.
1:09:20
Very the 2 agencies we work with on Intergenerational, this CYCD, and and Department of Education.
1:09:30
What we've done with aycd is we established programs in 10 facilities was our 1st pilot with older adults, and that was It wasn't just storytelling.
1:09:46
It really was.
1:09:46
The emphasis was on community building.
1:09:48
It was getting to know each other, come on projects together.
1:09:53
And we've had one whole group graduate, and we really do look at that as a successful model because what we are seeing is that older adults can recognize young people who they met met with in these in these community meetings.
1:10:10
And that that tension between them is is lesson.
1:10:13
It's all about community building.
1:10:15
I keep saying, this is not just share my story, and tomorrow I feel good about it, and Thursday I forget about it.
1:10:21
This is about making sure that they see themselves as key elements in that particular nature facility, and we're picking nature facilities.
1:10:30
And I believe that that project continues.
1:10:33
Right?
1:10:33
Janine runs Janine Ventura is the person who oversees the cabinet and all that sees oversees these revisionists.

1:10:43
And are there any challenges or opportunities aspirations in this space?
Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez
1:10:47
The aspiration is that older adults and and and young people get to see who they are, get to know who they are, and once you hear somebody's story.
1:10:56
And it takes away, you know, all of that distance and unfamiliarity dissipates fear and sees you as allies.
1:11:05
That's the aspiration for that.
Crystal Hudson
1:11:07
Thank you.
1:11:08
And how is NYC Aging supporting the provider network to do this, which many are already doing?
Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez
1:11:14
Many of them are doing.
1:11:15
What are the things that we did was.
1:11:18
We submitted a grant to the Robin Hood Foundation.
1:11:21
We've gotten accepted for the 1st round.
1:11:24
We'll see where we are, and it's basically to expand this kind of work.
1:11:28
We also wanted to do some work with Robin Hood on looking at Who are the intergenerational what are the intergenerational programs citywide?
1:11:38
What are the models so that then we, as a department, can start figuring out a way of replicating those models.
1:11:44
We're still at the nay you know, the very, you know, young stage of that.
Crystal Hudson
1:11:48
Absolutely.
1:11:49
And I just wanna confirm, you mentioned dycd and DOE as 2 agencies that you're working with on intergenerational programming.
1:11:56
Are there any other agencies that you're working with on generational programming or just those 2?
1:12:00
No.
1:12:00
Those are the 2 that Okay.
1:12:01
Great.
1:12:02
