Proposal 14 would create a new zoning use category for micro-distribution centers and allow them at a small scale in commercial districts. This would provide more options for package delivery hubs in denser areas and reduce truck congestion.
"We have post offices in every neighborhood of New York City. But unless you are the federal government, you can't do the same kinds of parcel pickup and delivery within buildings except in industrial areas."

We have post offices in every neighborhood of New York City.

But unless you are the federal government, you can't do the same kinds of parcel pickup and delivery within buildings except in industrial areas.

What this does forces the activity to occur on sidewalks and streets leading to traffic congestion both in the area where the delivery occurs, but also in the industrial areas where the packages originate.

So we're proposing create a new type of use in zoning called a microdis distribution facility and allow these businesses to locate a small scale in commercial areas encouraging deliveries to shift to alternative modes of transportation and regulating the creation of local hubs for safe and sustainable deliveries to occur.
