Dorothy Lyon, a Brooklyn Heights resident, testifies about the severe noise pollution from increased helicopter traffic at the downtown Manhattan Heliport.
- The number of helicopters landing and taking off has dramatically increased over the past 2 years.
- The loud helicopter noise makes it impossible for Lyon to be productive in her living room.
- The reverberating helicopter noise is especially bad in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
- Lyon has witnessed helicopters landing and taking off from the heliport every 4-5 minutes in the afternoon.
- The helicopter traffic peaks from 2pm to 7pm daily and starts earlier on weekends.
- Lyon believes most flights are commuter routes to and from airports like JFK and Newark.
- She supports bills limiting the downtown heliport to emergency use only to reduce commuter helicopter noise.

Sure.

Hi.
2:56:51
Hi.
2:56:52
My name is Dorothy Lyon, and I live in Brooklyn Heights Across the East River from the downtown Manhattan, Haliport.
2:56:59
Over the last 2 years, the number of helicopters landing and taking off from the heliport has increased dramatically.
2:57:05
The noise from the helicopter can often be heard in my living room to the extent that I cannot accomplish anything productive.
2:57:13
There's no place in my apartment to escape the noise.
2:57:16
The loud sound of reverberating helicopter blaze is especially bad in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
2:57:22
I've watched from the park as helicopters have landed and taken off from the heliport every 4 to 5 minutes in the afternoon.
2:57:29
The helicopter traffic starts to increase around 2 PM and lasts until about 7 PM.
2:57:35
Weekends are even worse as the helicopters begin their flights earlier in the day.
2:57:40
The only time they don't fly is when it is rainy and or windy out.
2:57:44
It doesn't matter whether the choppers are flying over the park or the river.
2:57:48
The sound is still really loud.
2:57:50
It is hard to enjoy being in the park with this overwhelming racket.
2:57:54
And I would say these seem to be mainly commuter flights because I'm watching them, and they are heading off towards JFK or over South Brooklyn or heading down to Newark.
2:58:07
So it's to me, I I'm not sure the first flights.
2:58:11
I to me, they seem to be more commuter flights, and they're they it's just overwhelming.
2:58:20
I would just say that I I fully support the bills and resolutions before the city council, but I would actually say the number of commuter helicopters to area airports needs to be sharply reduced, and I actually would like to see the DMH used only for emergency purposes.
2:58:39
Thank you.
