The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection is using multiple channels to share information about the Worker's Bill of Rights.

  • Employers are required to post the Bill of Rights at their places of business.
  • The Department has sent communications to its licensed businesses and permittees.
  • Information has been shared with over 600 business associations.
  • The Bill of Rights will be posted at all shelters in partnership with the Department of Social Services.
  • Information is being sent to over 1,200 community organizations.
  • Starting around May 1st, there will be on-the-ground outreach and canvassing with community partners.
  • The Department plans to engage workers directly at different locations.

In terms of the worker's bill of rights how are you disseminating that information to workers?
Carlos Ortiz
0:49:28
So we I guess we're we're working on 2 different tracks in terms of disseminating the information.
0:49:36
1, there is requirement for employers opposed to worker bill of rights at the place of business as well.
0:49:41
So we have, for example, been sending communications out to our licensed sees to health permitees.
0:49:48
We've also been and that's on the on the business side.
0:49:50
We've been sending it to our our entire business association list, which is over 600 groups.
0:49:56
And then on the worker side, we've been thinking about how we can ensure that it is accessible in many different places for workers.
0:50:02
So something we recently did is be in touch with our colleagues at DSS and ensuring that the worker bill of rights will be presented at all shelters I mean, posted at all shelters.
0:50:13
We're also sending it out to our list of 1200 plus community organizations.
0:50:17
I think on the ground outreach, We really plan to start around May 1st and do out the whole summer.
0:50:23
Again, working closely with our community partners.
0:50:25
I'm really looking forward to that in terms of getting back out in the fields.
0:50:29
Not just presentations, but we also do canvassings to make sure that we're engaging with folks at different different points.

I know that the council we'd be very interested in partnering on that, having council members partner, have it in their newsletters, making sure that we are helping to disseminate the information.
0:50:47
I also wanna suggest a day of action.
0:50:50
We did that when we launched a paid sick leave law.
0:50:53
It worked incredibly well.
0:50:54
It subway stop throughout the city and other places.
0:50:58
We also did that around in nail salons or we did a nail salon day of action where we literally went business to business, to talk to workers, to let them know about the rights.
0:51:07
Because even though it's required to be in the place of business, oftentimes, workers may feel fearful or about filing any kind of complaint.
0:51:17
They're worried about retaliation.
0:51:19
So I think it's so important that we meet workers where they are to let them know that we are there for them in terms of these complaints being filed.

Thank you so much.
0:51:28
It's very exciting, and and I hope, you know, through social media, for example, I hope every city council member is following us.
0:51:35
Because we do put a lot of information to help us get the word output, you have more information, as well as we have a newsletter also with, like, update on, like, cases and recent accomplishments and things like that.
0:51:47
But if any of our of our city council members are not yet subscribed to it, we would love have you subscribed to it as well and help us get the word out.
Carlos Ortiz
0:51:55
And councilor, I'll I'll certainly ensure that every every council office receives the worker bill of rights too.
