The council member asks if there are any notable success stories where city programs have reduced commercial vacancy rates.

  • The deputy commissioner responds that they have not specifically tracked vacancy rate changes.
  • However, he provides an example of the Brooklyn Chinese Association matching entrepreneurs to vacant spaces in InstantSet Park.
  • Another effort is a 'quarter walk' program by Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) to connect entrepreneurs with available vacant spaces.
  • The department aims to share successful strategies across its network to implement in high-vacancy areas.

We haven't looked at how the vacancy rate has changed, but we do have good examples of InstantSet Park, where the Brooklyn Chinese Association was able to match entrepreneurs to vacant spaces in their district, QED we'll be doing a similar sort of quarter walk with potential entrepreneurs who can access those vacant spaces.

And then when we get those best practices, we like to share that among the network and with other partners so that we see that things work in other neighborhoods that they may be able to be useful tools and communities that are experiencing high vacancy rates.
