The Parks Department has over 100 garbage truck packers of two different sizes, as well as pickup trucks that are used when needed.
- During peak season from late April to mid-October, heavily used sites like large parks, playgrounds, pools, and spray showers have trash picked up 7 days a week.
- Less busy sites with few trash cans may have less frequent pickups.
- In winter months with shorter days and less usage, the schedule shifts to a 5-day per week operation.
- Council Member Brewer raises concern that 5 days may be insufficient in some neighborhoods like Riverside Park due to continued usage on weekends.

And then boat basin and garbage.
Sue Donoghue
4:12:59
Yes.
4:13:00
Your question regarding Garmin structures, how many do we have?
Gale Brewer
4:13:03
How many do you have?
4:13:04
And then just how many how many times are they deployed or whatever it is, because it's my understanding that the garbage is not picked up every day.
4:13:11
And, of course, you know what happens.
Sue Donoghue
4:13:13
Yes.
4:13:13
Absolutely.
4:13:14
I'm gonna hand that question over to our deputy commissioner Mark Pope.
4:13:19
Thank you.
Mark Focht
4:13:19
Thank you.
4:13:20
Good afternoon.
4:13:23
There we am.
4:13:24
Thank you for the question.
4:13:25
We have over 100 vehicles.
4:13:27
I will get you the exact number 100 packers in two different sizes.
4:13:31
We also, when needed, use our pickup trucks to pick up bag trash if it's on a route or at a place where we can't get a pack or 2.
4:13:38
During our peak season, which generally runs late April through middle of October, we service our heavily used sites 7 days a week.
4:13:46
So we have staff working 7 days and we have packers out running 7 days a week picking up.
4:13:51
That doesn't mean we pick up at every site if it's a small triangle, then may have one trash can at it that's not an active busy site.
4:13:59
Those will be maintained less than every day, but our busy sites are big parks, our playgrounds, certainly our pools, our spray showers are maintained.
4:14:09
Trash has picked up 7 days a week from late day roll through the middle of October.
UNKNOWN
4:14:12
And
Gale Brewer
4:14:13
then the other times of the year is less often.
4:14:15
It could be depending on what?
Mark Focht
4:14:17
During during the winter months, when we have shorter daylight and less use, we have less trash, and so we go to from a 7 day week operation to a 5 day week operation.
Gale Brewer
4:14:25
Okay.
4:14:25
I have to say I understand, but I'm just letting you know in my neighborhood because you still have a lot of people out there seem to stop.
4:14:31
That's the weekends are usually the ones where they're not picked up, 5 days a week, meaning Monday to Friday.
4:14:36
And then you do have a lot of trash, and then you have the rats.
4:14:39
I just think it's something to look at because I think we're no more snow and climate change, and it ain't gonna be cold anymore.
4:14:46
So I'm just pointing out that that 5 day may be a problem.
Mark Focht
4:14:49
Certainly, if there's specific sites you'd like us to look at, we
Gale Brewer
4:14:51
should Riverside Park.
Mark Focht
4:14:53
Well, we know Riverside well.
4:14:54
Yes.
4:14:54
Okay.
Gale Brewer
4:14:55
I I need to have more trash pickup.
4:14:59
And my boat base and and my liveboards.
Sue Donoghue
4:15:02
Yes.
4:15:02
So in terms of the 79th Street boat, base.
4:15:05
And as you know, there's 90,000,000 in my oral funding
Gale Brewer
4:15:07
Yep.
Sue Donoghue
4:15:08
That it has been allocated for full judging and reconstruction of the marina Yep.
4:15:14
That that will happen, the judging will happen concurrent with the reconstruction and that is anticipated for a 2027 Rio spinning.
Gale Brewer
4:15:24
Okay.
4:15:24
And liver boards will be allowed.
4:15:26
I I have a 52.
4:15:28
I only have 9 people there.
4:15:29
I want 52 liver boards.
Sue Donoghue
4:15:32
That is a question we'll have to get back to you on.
4:15:35
I'm not exactly positive, but happy to get back to you.
4:15:37
Alright.
4:15:38
Thank you.
