The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation is still in the process of recruiting and training lifeguards for the current year, with ongoing training classes and recertification processes.
- There were 900 lifeguards employed the previous year.
- Currently, there are 561 individuals enrolled in the training classes, an increase from 375 last year.
- An additional training class was added this year at Hamilton High School, thanks to the Department of Education.
- On average, around 70% of lifeguards return from the previous year.
- The department hopes to surpass last year's number of 900 lifeguards.

Okay.
4:06:51
Thank you council member for the questions.
4:06:54
So I'm gonna start with lifeguards and probably hand it over to the 1st deputy commissioner 900 is the number from last year.
4:07:01
Right now, we do very much.
4:07:03
We have 3 training classes going on, so we don't have a final number.
4:07:08
We have both training classes happening, and then lifeguards coming in to recertify.
4:07:12
Okay.
4:07:12
So we are still very much in the process, but As I said, we did well with recruitment.
4:07:17
We are we have more lifeguards and training than we have in past years.
4:07:23
So we are very much hoping that we will get to and surpass the number from last.
Gale Brewer
4:07:29
Do you know how many in the training classes even though they may not all make it?
4:07:32
Do you have some sense of how many, how many?
Iris Rodriguez-Rosa
4:07:34
So we have currently what last year, we had 375 that actually were in the class.
4:07:39
This year, we actually have 561 that are actually going into the training classes, which is really a Congratulations.
4:07:46
Wonderful increase.
4:07:48
We also had added another class because we only had 2 training classes last year.
4:07:52
This year, we were able to add a 3rd class that actually the Department of Education allowed us to be able to use for Hamilton High School to be able to do that.
4:08:00
So we continue to increase and to try to provide the standards necessary and to try to provide locations that this can happen.
4:08:09
So We're very excited about these opportunity, and we continue to try to engage and do that.
4:08:15
And we also get about 70% of the returning of the life guides that come to us are 70% from last year from the previous year.
4:08:23
So that's the average of what we've been seeing.
Gale Brewer
4:08:25
Oh, 70% of 900 plus 561.
4:08:28
That's sort of what
Iris Rodriguez-Rosa
4:08:29
you're Hopefully, 561 or whatever.
Gale Brewer
4:08:30
Some percentage of 561 and 70% of the 900.
Sue Donoghue
4:08:34
Yeah.
4:08:35
Just a
Gale Brewer
4:08:35
little bit more.
4:08:36
Right?
4:08:36
But that's a good beginning.
Iris Rodriguez-Rosa
4:08:37
Yes.
4:08:38
Absolutely.
4:08:39
Yeah.
