Commissioner Jessica Tisch explains that the waste export tonnage has been relatively consistent at around 3.2 million tons per year, but the costs have increased due to contractual price changes tied to the consumer price index and inflation, averaging around 3% more per year.

  • The waste export contracts are long-term and pre-date the current administration
  • The tonnage numbers have remained fairly stable in recent fiscal years
  • Cost increases are driven by inflation adjustments built into the long-term contracts
  • The average annual cost increase has been around 3% due to these inflation adjustments

Can you provide insights into the trends and the budget for waste export over the past few years, including any significant increases or fluctuation in cost?

Yeah.

Reference tonnage has been relatively consistent, maybe down a bit, but relatively consistent for the past few fiscal years approximately 3,200,000 tons per year, but the city's export costs have increased due to contractual price changes for short and long term export facilities, largely tied to agreed upon consumer price index changes, and inflation, which can average approximately 3% more per year.

As you know, these contracts are very long term contracts that predated all of us.
