Council Member Dinowitz questions CUNY officials about data collection on student intentions and experiences, particularly regarding transfer students. The discussion reveals that CUNY had conducted a one-time survey funded by a federal grant, but does not have ongoing comprehensive data collection.

  • CUNY officials acknowledge the need for better data collection and transparency
  • The importance of including student voices in data collection is emphasized
  • The discussion highlights the disconnect between administrative data and student experiences

Agreed.
0:46:29
I want to go back to my first question about data.
0:46:37
Because I'm reading the Kinney website, I I wanna make sure I heard you that you don't have the data on what students intend to do.
0:46:46
But on the CUNY website, it I'm just gonna read you a paragraph.
0:46:52
It says, This is from CUNY.edu.
0:46:56
It's about associates of bachelor degree transfer.
0:47:01
This is the leaks in the transfer pipeline between associate's degree and bachelor's degrees are a critical problem nationally as well as in the community system.
0:47:12
About 30% of college students in the US are enrolled in community colleges, but 87% at CUNY say that their ultimate goal is to earn a bachelor's degree, which by definition necessitates transfer between colleges.
0:47:26
However, 6 years later, only 11% Acuni have done so.
0:47:32
And so is I don't know if I asked the question wrong or if they you're using data that you don't have, but if you could talk about that for a sec, please.
Colin Chellman
0:47:40
All of the above.
0:47:42
We received a one time federal grant to do a study of transfer students, so that was a large it funded a large scale survey of incoming students.
0:47:51
And Those are the results he saw.
0:47:53
Unfortunately, it was one time funding.
Eric Dinowitz
0:47:55
So you do have data.
Colin Chellman
0:47:57
Well, one year.
Eric Dinowitz
0:47:58
I mean, but the
Colin Chellman
0:47:59
but we don't track.
Wendy Hensel
0:48:00
Contract.
0:48:02
So it was a snapshot as opposed to and we we don't do it on a regular basis.
0:48:07
We didn't we had special funding to do a 1 year survey, which actually wasn't aware of.
0:48:11
So I'm glad I appreciate you pointing that out.
0:48:13
But we do not have a practice of tracking where we could go in and give you hard data on this question.
Eric Dinowitz
0:48:19
Okay.
0:48:19
I I I would hope that in the future, if I ask a question about data, you can put all the caveats you want on it that we have a one time survey.
0:48:29
But it would very much be appreciated if that if that data were shared because it felt feels hidden, right, when I'm like looking trying to look up data here and reading from the website.
0:48:43
So So there is data that exists and certainly things have changed in those few years, but I think fundamentally, It highlights the the problem, and I just really need to articulate that before moving on to the question.
