Council Member Dinowitz presents statistics about the gap between community college students' transfer intentions and actual outcomes. He cites a report by the Center for an Urban Future, highlighting the low transfer and completion rates for CUNY community college students.
- 8 out of 9 community college students intend to transfer, but only 1 in 9 actually transfers and earns a bachelor's degree within 6 years
- Less than 50% of transfer students complete their bachelor's degrees within 3 years of enrolling in senior colleges
- Completion rates are even lower for Black and Hispanic students
- The transfer-related obstacles are noted to be pervasive across colleges nationwide, not unique to CUNY

Even though the vast majority of community college students started saying they intended to transfer to senior colleges 809 hardly any of them actually do.

Furthermore, Fewer than 50% of those students who do transfer to senior colleges go on to complete their bachelor's degrees within 3 years of enrolling there.

And rates of completion are even lower for black and Hispanic students.

Those numbers should be concerning to all of us.

The Center for Urban Future Report makes it clear that transfer related obstacles are pervasive in colleges across the country and are definitely not unique to CUNY.

That has been true for many years.
