QUESTION

Are more crashes caused by jaywalking in the middle of the block or at crosswalks? And does street design contribute to pedestrian-vehicle conflicts?

The council member asks if more crashes occur due to jaywalking in the middle of the block versus at crosswalks.

  • The deputy commissioner does not have that data readily available.
  • The council member wonders if street design complicates how pedestrians and vehicles move, potentially contributing to crashes.

And commissioner, do you find that there are more crashes that occur with Jay Walking from the middle of the block versus the crosswalk, or are they happening more at the cross what?

I'd have to get back to you.

Because I'm interested in understanding that too.
1:20:43
Like, maybe it's a matter of street design as well because I know sometimes when DOT lays out certain street designs, it complicates the way traffic and pedestrians move that I've found in my own district.

So I wonder if that contributes to it in any way as well.
