Monty Dean explains the various types of bollards used by the NYC Department of Transportation and their respective safety functions.

  • Security bollards are designed to prevent vehicles traveling at high speeds from mounting the curb.
  • Bell or Martello bollards, which are lower to the ground, are used on pedestrian islands to deter vehicles from encroaching when making turns.
  • Pipe bollards are installed to prevent vehicles from parking in restricted areas or backing into infrastructure.
  • While not intended for security against high-speed vehicles, pipe bollards serve specific safety and regulatory purposes.

What safety advantages do does DOT fill ballers provide compared to other sidewalk or street treatment?

Thank you, council member.
0:54:17
Well, certainly for the security ballards, they are intended to stop vehicles that are going at speed from mounting the the curb.

For other types of ballers, as I mentioned, there are the the ones that we call bell ballers or Martello ballers, which are sort of lower to the grounds that we use mostly on pedestrian islands because they address vehicles who are making a turn onto that street and try to prevent them from from getting on to those islands.

The only other instances, there are a handful of instances where, for instance, pipe ballards might be used, but it's usually for things like preventing people from parking in those areas or from backing into something.

But it's those because they're not security related.
0:54:58
They're not intended to stop vehicles that are going at speed.
