QUESTION

What is DOT's stance on using light or medium duty bollards?

30 sec

The council member asks whether DOT has studied the use of light or medium duty bollards. The DOT director explains that these types of bollards, referred to as Martello or pipe bollards, are considered for limited instances where vehicles may try to park in pedestrian areas or back into certain spaces, but they are not seen as effective at preventing cars from driving onto sidewalks.

  • DOT has looked into using Martello or pipe bollards
  • These bollards are considered for situations like preventing illegal parking in pedestrian zones
  • They are not viewed as a solution for stopping vehicles from driving onto sidewalks
  • Their use is seen as limited in scope

I think that would be sort of what we're describing as the Martello ballards or the pipe ballards.
0:56:34
Again, those would be mainly in instances where somebody might be trying to park in an area that pedestrians are using or backing into something.
0:56:43
So it's sort of limited instances where those might be useful and wouldn't be preventing vehicles from driving onto the sidewalks.
