Today, we will vote on Resolution Number 10, which I have sponsored to annually recognize July 27th as Korean War Veterans Armistice Day in New York City.

On June 25 1950, North Korea invaded South along the 38 parallel prompting the US and other UN member nations to send troops to aid South Korea.

The ensuing 3 year war resulted in the loss of millions of Korean civilians and soldiers from many countries.

It deeply affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, including nearly 1,800,000 US service members, with more than 30 6000 American deaths and over a 103,000 wounded.

The Korean armistice agreement signed on July 27 1953, yes, and I was alive, ended the armed conflict but did not establish a formal peace treaty.

This military truce, the longest negotiated in history created the demilitarized zone, which remains patrolled by US service members committed to maintaining the fragile peace.

Next week, July 27th, marks the 71st anniversary of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement.
