I'm I'm very glad you you asked that madam speaker because the role of a of a lawyer litigating on behalf of clients in private practice is to represent them zealously and ethically and get the best results you can for them.
1:00:14
And I'm known as a as a lawyer who's tenacious and successful in the courtroom.
1:00:19
So no one is a bear in the courtroom, but I'm actually a teddy bear in real life, and I was honored to have the opportunity to to meet with you prior to these hearings.
1:00:28
I'm actually in government.
1:00:30
My personal deputy maybe not my old bosses who wasn't the easiest guy to work with all the time.
1:00:36
But my personal reputation was one of reaching across the aisle, building coalitions, reaching across the whole, getting things done, and working well with other members in government, you know, and the different branches of government, and the different offices of government.
1:00:53
That's why they're all supporting me now.
1:00:55
So we did a lot of positive things for the city.
1:00:59
No one thought we could break organized crime stranglehold, the Fulton Fishburne private carding industry.
1:01:04
No one thought we could pass the most sweeping domestic partnership protections in the country at the time for same sex couples.
1:01:09
No one thought we could close the fresh kills landfill.
1:01:12
And have a more environmentally sound policy.
1:01:14
We did a lot of constructive things.
1:01:16
No one thought we could move the illegal vendors off of a 125th Street without violence an incident and now have it be a thriving commercial center and those vendors in their own smart operating legally a few blocks away.
1:01:28
There are so many positive things when I look back on my own time there and so many relationships I built that you know I built because of the people who are supporting me today.
1:01:39
So I understand the difference in the role.
1:01:42
I understand what it is.
1:01:43
To build coalitions, to work with partners in government, and I have a proven track record of doing that.
1:01:49
That's why every major elected Democrat in my era supports me now.
1:01:54
That's why every Democrat who's been the mayor's the nominee for mayor from 2001 to the present.
1:02:00
I've either represented or supports me or both.
1:02:05
I build bridges.
1:02:06
I am a consensus builder.
1:02:09
I am a communicator and my goodness madam speaker, right now, more than ever, we could use some communication in city hall to build bridges, and I'm prepared to do that for both sides of the hall.
