The Heckscher Building played a significant role in the development of Midtown Manhattan, being one of the first tall commercial buildings in the area.

In the in 1980 3 was renamed the crown building, and at that time, many of the architectural features were gilded gold, and the facades illuminated through an architectural lighting program.
