Council Member Yusef Salaam inquires about the relocation plans for current vendors during the construction of the Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Plaza project. Peter Procida and Tariq Shahid explain the relocation strategy and considerations.

  • Most vendors will relocate to a vacant site on the same block
  • About 11-12 vendors (tailors) will need to be relocated to nearby storefronts
  • Relocation costs are included in the project budget
  • The timing of relocation depends on the project's closing date, which is yet to be determined by HPD

I guess the final question in terms of these folks that are there being able to kind of, I guess, still participate in business.
0:23:49
During the time of construction, where do you plan to move the vendors who are currently running their businesses on these sites?
0:23:55
Do you have any monetary incentives to provide them to to per relocate their businesses?
0:24:01
And if so, have you incorporated these costs into your construction estimates?
Peter Procida
0:24:05
Yeah.
0:24:06
So the the the cost to relocate both away from and back to the market are incorporated into our budget.
0:24:14
The bulk of the vendors are gonna relocate to a vacant site.
0:24:17
It's, I think, 3 lots to the west of this current site, so it's on the same block.
0:24:24
There's about 11 or 12 vendors that we will need to relocate to a storefront.
0:24:29
We're, again, working on the timing of when we're gonna close.
0:24:35
Right now, there's last night counted, which is a couple weeks ago, 5 or 6 vacant storefronts on that block.
0:24:41
That, you know, we intend to reach out to the landlords and try and secure short term lease.
0:24:48
But until we're a little clearer from HPD as to when we're gonna close, it doesn't make sense for us to engage with a private landlord and secure that space and start, you know, paying rent and if we're not gonna close for, you know, 6, 12 months or whatever that might be.
0:25:06
But again, the the the cost to to build out both temp the temporary outdoor market and the temporary retail space, moving costs for the vendors both to and from the site are included within our budget.
Tariq Shahid

Counseling is also important to to know that the with his 36 vendors and 11 tailors.
0:25:27
So there's 36 regular vendors, driver vendors, and 11 tailors.
0:25:31
Those tailors, they're the space is so small.
0:25:34
That's why we're looking to put them in another location.
0:25:36
Their business is not based on on traffic that comes from out of the country guys.
0:25:41
Out of the state.
0:25:42
They're a home base, the people in the neighborhood know them they get their things made, tailor made from them.
0:25:47
So it doesn't affect them to the degree that would affect the people who are essentially good, dry goods.
Yusef Salaam
0:25:52
Understood.
0:25:54
Thanks.

Thank you so much.
