Council Member Lincoln Restler introduces a bill to cap the cost of Citi Bike rides at the same price as a subway fare.

He argues that bike share is an essential part of NYC's transit landscape and should be affordable and accessible to all.

  • Restler mentions that Citi Bike costs have recently increased, with rides now costing up to $10.
  • He suggests investing in connecting Citi Bike docks to the electrical grid for more efficient battery charging.
  • Restler encourages other council members to co-sponsor the bill.

I just wanna thank council member Avila's for those beautiful words and express my condolences to the friends and family and colleagues of of Carlos Carrillo Higgins.
1:23:02
Never easy to transition from those statements.
1:23:05
I think as everybody in this room knows, I really love city bike.
1:23:09
I have taken, like, 45100 city bike trips.
1:23:13
This year, the costs of city bike have skyrocketed.
1:23:17
There have been 2 price increases, and now it costs $10 to ride a city bike from Green Point to Calgary Gardens.
1:23:23
We are introducing a bill today, and I wanna thank council members, Marte, Osea, and Hudson for co sponsoring to cap the cost of a city bike ride to a subway fare.
1:23:34
It shouldn't cost any more to take the subway than it should to ride a bike.
1:23:38
It's that simple.
1:23:39
Bike share is an essential part of the New York City transit landscape.
1:23:42
We need to make it affordable and accessible to all.
1:23:46
The current pricing of our bike share program fails us.
1:23:51
I think it's a good time for us to be having a public conversation about how we can invest in the future of city bike, ensure that the docks are connected to our electrical grid so that batteries are automatically recharging, instead of hundreds of city bike vans, driving around New York City, swapping out dead batteries that makes 0 sense.
1:24:12
And in turn for those new public investments, we should be capping the fares and making sure that the price of a subway is the same price to ride a bike.
1:24:20
Never more.
1:24:23
Really wanna ask everyone.
1:24:24
I don't know what the number is.
1:24:25
I make I'm not gonna make it up.
1:24:27
But find the city bike bill, and please co sponsor it.
1:24:29
Thank you.
