Council Member Schulman inquires about the capacity of ACC shelters across boroughs. Risa Weinstock, President and CEO of Animal Care Centers of New York City, explains that capacity involves more than just space, including staff and animal populations.
- ACC currently has 797 animals in care, with Queens housing over 400 due to the Brooklyn shelter closure and increased foot traffic.
- Weinstock emphasizes that intake often exceeds physical cage space, and they focus on avoiding animal warehousing.
- The new Queens facility is experiencing high numbers due to being the first full-service center in the borough and absorbing animals from Brooklyn.

So, miss Weinstein, now I'm coming now I'm gonna come and concentrate on the ACC centers.
0:55:17
So is the current capacity of each ACC shelter and how often do you exceed this capacity in each shelter?
0:55:24
And can you provide a breakdown by borough of shelter capacity?
Risa Weinstock
0:55:31
When we speak about capacity, it's more than just space.
0:55:37
Mhmm.
0:55:38
It it includes staff, and it includes everything that's going on with all of the populations, all of the species.
0:55:48
We currently have in care a lot of animals, and certainly We are looking at ways to creatively house all of these animals.
0:56:06
The intake far exceeds the physical cage space in any of the care centers.
0:56:12
And it's something that it's really difficult to plan for because we do not want to warehouse animals.
0:56:18
So it's not about the number of pages.
0:56:20
It's more about what is the capacity.
0:56:23
In terms of each borough, we're talking about Manhattan Staton Island, and Queens.
0:56:30
And
Lynn C. Schulman
0:56:33
give me a moment.
0:56:38
Do you have those numbers?
0:56:39
Or Well,
Risa Weinstock
0:56:42
Right now, the whole the entire sense is for the animals that we are housing.
0:56:47
We are at 797 animals.
Lynn C. Schulman
0:56:52
And do you have a breakdown, my brother?
0:56:53
I mean, you can get
Risa Weinstock
0:56:54
it Well, Queens has over 400.
Lynn C. Schulman
0:56:58
And that's because of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn shelter closing.
0:57:01
Right?
Risa Weinstock
0:57:02
Yes.
Lynn C. Schulman
0:57:03
Okay.
Risa Weinstock
0:57:03
I think it's a combination.
0:57:05
However, I would say, Queen's has never had a full service, Carson.
Lynn C. Schulman
0:57:09
Right.
Risa Weinstock
0:57:10
And so I think that we're seeing animals from Brooklyn and a more just more foot traffic from from the borough of Queens.
