Council Member Brannan inquires about the impact of Operation Padlock on the Sheriff's Office's responsibilities and hiring practices. Sheriff Miranda clarifies the nature of their operations and discusses plans for increasing staff.

  • The Sheriff's Office conducts inspections, not raids, of smoke shops
  • A new academy class is planned to start in October
  • The upcoming academy class will be the largest in the history of the sheriff's office, with 90 approved headcount
  • The hiring process involves examinations, background checks, and fingerprinting

Okay.
0:45:24
Before Operation Padlock, the sheriff's role of investigating illegal marijuana shops was significantly smaller.
0:45:33
Thanks to legislation at the state, you now have more power to investigate and make arrests.
0:45:37
Has hiring increased since the creation of Operation Padlock?
Anthony Miranda
0:45:41
I'm sorry.
0:45:41
I need to correct the statement that you're making you just if you can repeat how you said this question again?
Justin L. Brannan
0:45:47
Sure.
0:45:47
So before before operation padlock, the sheriff's role of raiding the illegal marijuana shops was significantly smaller and harder.
0:45:55
Right?
0:45:55
Once the state gave you once the state legislation passed, you now have more power.
0:46:00
Question is, has hiring increased since the creation of operation padlock?
Anthony Miranda
0:46:04
Okay.
0:46:05
We conduct inspections of smoke shops, not raids is for clarity.
0:46:10
We were not in inspecting smoke shops until it became the authority was granted to the sheriff's office to that, we were smoking for other violations in in the different various locations due to sheriff's joint compliance task force.
Justin L. Brannan
0:46:23
So have you have you hired more since since you got that authority?
0:46:28
That's the question.
Anthony Miranda
0:46:30
We have we are currently slated to start a class hopefully this month of October.
Justin L. Brannan
0:46:38
And as and you mentioned the vacancy rate.
0:46:40
Is there a higher focus at the sheriff's office on hiring these deputies?
Anthony Miranda
0:46:45
Absolutely.
0:46:45
We have been trying to hire deputies quite some time this entire process.
0:46:49
So it didn't just start today.
0:46:51
They had to take an examination after the examination.
0:46:53
We had to do background checks on them.
0:46:55
With completing fingerprinting process.
0:46:57
And then like I said, I believe that we have a 90 approved headcount for the Academy class.
0:47:02
It will be the largest Academy class in the history of the sheriff's office.
