Joseph DiGiacomo, a Fire Marshall from FDNY, provided a demonstration of a K9 named Ray, showcasing the dog's abilities in ignitable liquid detection. The demonstration highlighted the unique skills of FDNY's K9 unit in finding trace amounts of accelerants in fire investigations.

  • Ray, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, was named after Chief Ray Downey, who was lost on September 11, 2001.
  • The K9 can detect up to 35 different liquids in quantities as small as a Q-tip's worth.
  • Unlike other K9 units, FDNY's dogs are trained to find substances in burnt-out areas where nothing visible remains.
