NYCHA is facing a significant challenge with rent arrears, which have increased dramatically since 2019. The agency is currently collecting only a fraction of the rent owed, impacting its ability to maintain and improve housing.
- Rent collection rate is about 68% of rent owed
- Rent arrears stand at $487 million, nearly four times the 2019 level
- Current arrears exceed the ERAP funding secured for residents

Unfortunately, we are currently collecting only about 68% of the rent owed and rent arrears now stand at 487,000,000, nearly four times what it was in 2019 and well beyond the ERAP funding we've secured for our residents.
