Kenneth Lo from MOIA discusses the challenges and recommendations for the language access coordinator role within city agencies. He highlights the complexity of the position and the variations in its implementation across different agencies.
- Language access coordinators need to engage with a broad range of operational areas within agencies
- The position of the coordinator within the agency hierarchy impacts their effectiveness
- Many coordinators wear multiple hats, which can be both compatible and incompatible with their language access duties
- Agencies with full-time dedicated language access coordinators tend to be more effective in implementing language access initiatives
- The size of the agency influences the structure and resources allocated to the language access coordinator role

Do you I think we talked about it a little bit earlier.
2:02:34
There was definitely a recommendation on the table.
2:02:36
Do you have other recommendations?
2:02:38
Like, I'm particularly intrigued by the language access coordinators who have very different roles.
2:02:45
Right there.
2:02:46
It's a combined role and how resources are honestly allocated because I'm sure those are probably 2 completely full time jobs.
2:02:57
If you could talk a little bit about some of the recommendations and and guidance you would provide around this challenge?

And if the language access coordinator was a an interesting position to the agency, needing to be able to engage with a broad range of operational areas.
2:03:23
We find that language access coordinators sit in different nets.
2:03:27
Places within agencies, submarine comms, submarine contracts.
2:03:34
I think the may also wanna make sure that it's someone who's high enough enough that they have some pull.
2:03:43
Right?
2:03:46
And that they can focus on the work sometimes.
2:03:55
Quite often, the lack is wearing multiple hats.
2:04:00
Sometimes those hats are compatible.
2:04:02
Sometimes those hats are not so compatible.
2:04:05
Uh-huh.
2:04:06
And we find that agencies, as I've mentioned earlier, like, agencies that do have a full time dedicated black are able to move things better.
2:04:21
Yeah.
2:04:22
And where they have teams even further, especially in in their ability to engage across different silos with an agency.
2:04:34
And, again, you know, this this varies depending on the size of agency.

Sure.
