Council Member Krishnan and Commissioner Donoghue discuss the Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP) officer staffing and its limitations in covering both parks and beaches. The conversation highlights the challenges of patrolling extensive areas with limited resources.

  • Total number of PEP officers: 260
  • Additional 250 seasonal CSAs supplement the core PEP staff
  • Krishnan expresses concern about the feasibility of effectively patrolling 14 miles of beaches and all city parks with the current staffing levels
  • Discussion underscores the need for more resources to ensure adequate coverage

And with my bill, we extend to 8 PM for a much longer season too.
0:45:58
So that's what we're looking to do.
0:46:01
I do wanna ask the commissioner on that point in particular.
0:46:04
How many these are the same PEP officers, for example, that are out on our beaches that are also patrolling our parks across the city.
Sue Donoghue
0:46:09
Right?
0:46:09
Right.
Shekar Krishnan
0:46:09
How many PEP officers do we have on in the Department of Parks of Recreation?
Sue Donoghue
0:46:14
That number is 250.
0:46:18
260.
0:46:19
I'm
Shekar Krishnan
0:46:19
gonna say 300, but 260.
0:46:21
So close enough.
0:46:22
But 260 off PeP officers in our parks and across 14 miles of beaches.
0:46:29
And I understand that was the work that was done to make up for the fact that we're no lifeguards on duty, but it's not simply possible for what the parks department budget the way it is with the PEP officer corps the way it is to patrol 14 miles of beaches with 260 PEP officers who are also responsible for all of our New York City Parks too.
Sue Donoghue
0:46:50
And I just have to add counsel member.
0:46:52
Thank you to Matt.
0:46:53
They're at that a core of 260 is supplemented by an additional 250 seasonal CSAs.
