Council Member Abreu asks about DSNY's involvement in collecting waste from deconstructed outdoor dining sheds. Deputy Commissioner Goodman explains the department's limited role in this process.

  • DSNY was involved in some cases of dining shed disposal, but other agencies like DOT also participated
  • The distinction in responsibility was mainly based on crew availability
  • For active businesses, the disposal of deconstructed sheds is considered commercial waste and should be handled by private carters
  • DSNY's involvement is primarily focused on abandoned sheds or those from businesses that no longer exist

I wanna turn briefly our attention to dining sheds.
1:22:51
This summer many restaurants had to deconstruct the outdoor dining sheds.
1:22:55
Was this and why involved in a collection of waste produced as a result?
Joshua Goodman
1:22:59
We were in some cases.
1:23:02
Some of it was collected by DOT and possibly other agencies, but we were occasionally called in towards
Shaun Abreu
1:23:07
Why the distinction?
Joshua Goodman
1:23:08
I I think it was just about crews available

availability.
1:23:12
Did DSNY consult a DOT about the massive number of deconstructed dining sheds?
Joshua Goodman
1:23:18
I'm not sure.
1:23:18
I wasn't involved in those conversations.
1:23:20
I don't believe so.
Shaun Abreu
1:23:20
I'm I'm starting you know, at least my offices.
1:23:22
I'm imagining some offices are starting to feel complaints that there's gonna be a lot of deconstructed dining sheds.
1:23:31
You know, one is removing it and also how we are disposing of it Right.
1:23:34
Well.
1:23:36
So is there a plan there you know, respect to this is gonna be happening.
Joshua Goodman
1:23:40
It it gets at it gets at well, first of all, I mean, it's commercial waste.
1:23:45
Right?
1:23:45
The ones where DS and Y is involved are mostly, not always, but mostly ones where the shed is abandoned, where it belong to a business that no longer exists.
1:23:54
The ones that may be coming down as a result of where where the business is active and they've chosen to get rid of it, they would need to be working with their private Carter.
