Council Member Brooks-Powers discusses bus service and the Queens bus redesign with TWU member Milan Pierre Lewis, focusing on issues in Southeast Queens.

  • The bus redesign aims to increase service and reduce crowding on certain routes
  • Some areas may still lack adequate bus coverage after the redesign
  • Congestion, construction, and parking issues contribute to bus delays in the Rockaways
  • Buses face challenges with turning and accessing stops due to road conditions and illegal parking
Milan Pierre Lewis

So the area where I'm at, I'm a guy who blew a boulevard, so we we won with the 1 13, 114, 111.
Selvena N. Brooks-Powers
3:33:40
Are you on my route?
3:33:41
Okay.
3:33:41
Okay.
Milan Pierre Lewis
3:33:43
So, yes, a lot of people, a lot of, you know, a lot of these buses will help the community.
3:33:49
So we do want, like, I said, we won with the 114, the 111, one with the 114, and the 113.
3:33:56
So mostly people would want to go and get to the 113 and the 114 because it's limited.
3:34:02
So I know that would that would be designed it would help out because there will be more buses going to Rosedale because Rosedale is a lot of people is coming out of Rosedale, and that's when the dollar events come out also.
3:34:16
So there will be more bus is going towards that sort of thing.
Selvena N. Brooks-Powers
3:34:19
What about in Faraca Way?
Milan Pierre Lewis
3:34:21
In Faraca Way also because I know that with the design, there's they're gonna take out some and put more more buses.
3:34:31
So with that, it's gonna be more accessible to buses than you know, because they do have the a train, and we do come out of our alleyway, like 45 minutes due to the in the morning.
3:34:45
Because we are limited coming out of Farahuay and going into Farahuay.
Selvena N. Brooks-Powers
3:34:49
Can you talk to me about a little bit more about the limitations coming out of Rockaway, why you feel that to your point that it it takes so long to come out of Rockaway.
3:35:00
Is it because it's a matter of it's just that many people getting on the bus?
3:35:04
Is it the congestion?
3:35:05
Because our roads in Rockaway
Giovanni Ramos
3:35:07
Exactly.
Selvena N. Brooks-Powers
3:35:07
Is another conversation for DOT.
3:35:10
Right?
Milan Pierre Lewis
3:35:11
True.
3:35:11
It is.
3:35:11
Yes.
3:35:11
It's the congestion.
3:35:12
And we got a lot.
3:35:13
We got a lot of constructions going on, and we do drive, like, the artech buses.
3:35:20
So it takes us a minute to to turn in and out of of these roads when especially when they have been, like, world blacks and people parking on our bus stop people parking on our bus lanes.
3:35:33
So it took us more times, you know, to come in and come out of our bus stop and to service everything.
3:35:40
All of the people that we need to service.
3:35:42
But we do come, and we want, like, 5 to 10 minutes.
3:35:46
You know, we have 5 to 10 minutes headways.
3:35:49
By the time we leave, there's another one another bus behind us.
