Council Member Brooks-Powers asks former former council memberr Miller about how different transportation industries could coexist without diminishing each other, particularly in Southeast Queens. They discuss ridership patterns when commuter vans are unavailable.

  • Miller suggests that most riders use public transportation for work trips into the city or other boroughs.
  • He emphasizes the need to address transportation deserts in certain communities.
  • Miller recommends leveraging existing routes and assessing their efficiency to determine where vans could assist.

And and so and I thank you for that testimony.
2:13:15
I will say that I've heard consistently similar to what you shared in terms of the concerns in the bus route or below 96th Street.
2:13:24
And so considering that you have a significant transportation background, I would love to hear from you a world like, what could you see as a world where these 2 industries codes this without diminishing other.
2:13:40
And I asked you this because as someone who has who has and continues to represent parts of Southeast Queen's, you know firsthand what that ridership looks like.
2:13:51
And then I do wanna have a follow-up question that I asked early, and I didn't really get a clear answer.
2:13:56
But when the commuter vans are not available, do you see that the majority of those riders go to taking a bus or do they go into their personal vehicles?
I. Daneek Miller
2:14:10
Well, no.
2:14:11
I I I think that those who who travel into the city or into other boroughs for work are are probably using New York City or public transportation.
2:14:26
Just in general.
2:14:28
Yeah.
2:14:28
Just just a short of it.
2:14:29
Yeah.
2:14:30
I I think they're taking public transportation as a alternative not necessarily a alternative to me, but what I would envision what I I think has not been captured is that there are communities that are truly transportation desert for a plethora of reasons, logistics, and otherwise, somewhere like the rockaways and so forth like that.
2:14:56
I I think whether or not you're we're levering leveraging this conversation around greater transport public transportation options.
2:15:04
But in the meantime, could we see something like that in, you know, in there, but in terms of where routes already exist, which I think is the which is a Mhmm.
2:15:17
Task of DOT is to look at the existing routes and to see whether or not they are functioning efficiently.
2:15:28
Can they be better?
2:15:29
Could they be assisted by the vans?
2:15:32
And so that's their that's their job.
2:15:35
In in licensing the vans is assessing whether or not they are not performing or providing a service in that area.
2:15:46
So in terms of collaboration.
2:15:50
I I think DOT and their data collaboratively with the transit authority will will really serve to dictate whether or not or where, you know, they could possibly operate.
Selvena N. Brooks-Powers
2:16:04
And then I know, like, for example, in in Queens, we have the queen's buster redesign going on Mhmm.
