Mohammed Ali, a former Yellow Cab driver who switched to Uber and Lyft, testifies about the issues of driver deactivation by ride-hailing companies. He emphasizes the need for regulations to stop arbitrary and prolonged deactivations, which significantly impact drivers' lives and families.

  • Ali highlights the disproportionate control ride-hailing companies have over drivers, despite drivers bearing all the expenses and doing the actual work.
  • He calls for the City Council and Taxi and Limousine Commission to implement regulations to stop "nonsense deactivation."
  • The testimony underscores the disconnect between the companies' role as mere connectors between passengers and drivers, and their power to make all the rules and control everything.

Hi.
2:28:18
My name is Mohammed Aliyah Vaughn, and I drove Yellow Cab for 26 years and then switched to this promised land.
2:28:26
They call Uber and Lyft.
2:28:28
Because we thought the life is gonna be get a little better, but it's not.
2:28:33
This company have enormous kind of like control on the driver.
2:28:38
They can deactivate anytime they want And we are deactivated for a very long time, which is impact on our life and our family's life.
2:28:47
And this is just like it's saying on top, like government of the people, by the people.
2:28:52
So we are the people.
2:28:54
So we need the help from the city council and the members and the chair to please just like make the regulation to stop this deactivated deactivation for, like, unknown time and for for forever.
2:29:12
This shouldn't be like there because, like, we are the we are the one who are sitting on this hot seat, driving for hours and hours, burning of our blood, and burning of our fuel.
2:29:23
We're paying for all the expense of this car.
2:29:26
This company Uber and Lyft and other app companies, they have nothing.
2:29:30
They are just in reality, they are just the connecting companies.
2:29:33
They are connecting us with the passengers.
2:29:35
That's all they do.
2:29:36
But they make the all the rules and they control everything.
2:29:40
It shouldn't be like that.
2:29:42
So city council and the tax team, the cuisine commission, should be come out with some kind of like the regulations to stop this nonsense deactivation.
2:29:52
Thank you.
