CTO Fraser explains the development approach for the MyCity portal, emphasizing the benefits of web-based solutions over dedicated mobile applications. Council Member Holden expresses openness to adjusting the proposed legislation based on this feedback.

  • Fraser highlights the flexibility and compatibility of web-based solutions across various devices
  • He explains the challenges of building dedicated mobile apps for different platforms
  • Holden acknowledges the potential need to modify the bill to align with the most effective development approach

So one of the things that that I think we we found that was a bit taxing was the the fact of a mobile application.
0:57:47
I think more and more services are being pushed towards a web version.
0:57:51
Right?
0:57:51
So as long as it's capable of being deployed, on a mobile format, on a web version, that's what we've been opting towards.
0:57:58
It includes the greatest amount of flexibility with the greatest amount of compatibility.
0:58:02
So it doesn't matter what type of device you have, when you have mobile app, in the event that you're building for Android, in the event that you're building for iOS, you'd have to either build specifically in those platforms or build something that's across platform application.
0:58:17
And those experiences don't tend those experiences aren't aren't usually the best experience.
0:58:23
And I think for us, especially with the agility that we're moving and the amount of services that we're deploying, if we hold that to something that's web based, but that's mobile mobile aware and mobile friendly, I think that that's that's more aligned to what we've been building towards.
Robert F. Holden
0:58:38
Right?
0:58:38
So the mobile devices, it's just not it won't fit right or it doesn't work properly.
Matthew Fraser
0:58:46
So with when you build an application, that's web aware.
Robert F. Holden
0:58:49
Yeah.
Matthew Fraser
0:58:49
Whether you're using an iPhone, whether you're using an iPad, whether you're using an Android, device, a galaxy, or you're using a tablet, scalability, awareness of how big your display is, and adjusting content accordingly, with a mobile aware website.
0:59:06
It's capable of doing all of those things without committing to building an actual mobile application itself.
0:59:12
So it's it's most application processes today.
0:59:16
They there isn't a specific
Robert F. Holden
0:59:18
But see, that's something we could talk about because, you know, if it's easier or if it's better that that you have a a way other than what's mentioned in the bill, we can negotiate that.
0:59:28
That's why we're here.
0:59:31
Yeah.
0:59:32
So if we you know, I'm I'm open to that.
0:59:34
I think the committee is open to that if if you feel it, you know, doesn't work on me.
Matthew Fraser
0:59:38
Yeah.
0:59:38
For sure.
0:59:39
I think we we can certainly follow-up off this off outside of the forum, and then we can look in detail at the specifics of what works and what's the best path forward, and we can we can sort that out together.
