Challenges with increasing bus routes

Despite a relatively stable number of students using bus services, the New York City school system has seen a significant increase in the number of bus routes. This increase is due to various factors affecting student transportation needs.

  • Students are traveling farther to school than in the past
  • There are significantly more school sites to which students are bused
  • More students have limited travel time specifications in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • The increase in routes has led to operational challenges and resource constraints
  • These factors contribute to the complexity of managing the school bus system efficiently
