Despite a relatively stable number of students using bus services, the New York City school system has seen a significant increase in the number of bus routes. This increase is due to various factors affecting student transportation needs.
- Students are traveling farther to school than in the past
- There are significantly more school sites to which students are bused
- More students have limited travel time specifications in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- The increase in routes has led to operational challenges and resource constraints
- These factors contribute to the complexity of managing the school bus system efficiently
