Challenges with migrant students and temporary housing in NYC schools

Council Member Julie Won highlights the unique transportation challenges faced by the increasing number of migrant students and those in temporary housing, particularly in her district.
- Nearly doubled number of students in temporary housing assigned to yellow school buses over the past 3 years due to the ongoing migrant crisis
- School District 30, which overlaps with her council district, has the highest number of migrants registered in the DOE system
- New 30-60 day rule causing instability for students who have been in the same schools for over 2 years, as they are being evicted from homes they've lived in for more than a year

We need to strike a balance between providing stability for vendors and maintaining a flexibility to adapt to changes, adapting changing needs such as all of the migrants who have joined our schools this past 2 years.

This is particularly important given the unique transportation requirements of our driver's student population, including nearly doubled number of students in temporary housing assigned to yellow school buses over the past 3 years as a direct result of the ongoing migrant crisis.

Currently, School District 30, which overlaps with my council district, has the highest amount of migrants who are registered to the DOE system, as well as School District 24, which has a a very high influx of migrants as well.

And now with District 30, and my council district council district 26, having been part it has now been enrolled into the 30, 60 day rule.

So students are being evicted out of their homes that they have lived in for more than a year.
