Council Member Julie Won inquires about steps being taken to increase competition and MWBE participation in the school bus contract bidding process. DOE officials outline their strategies and priorities.
- MWBE participation is a significant priority for New York City Public Schools
- In the event of a rebid, strategies include creating smaller aggregate classes to allow for Prime MWBE vendors to be awarded
- For current contract extensions, they will attempt to pursue MWBE subcontracting
- Any changes to current contracts depend on vendor agreement

70 of the 100 contracts are noncompetitive for MWE's.

I think when we were getting briefed, there were 3 MWE's.

Can you help us understand what steps are being taken to increase competition and MWE participation for the bidding process?

Thank you for that question.
2:32:28
As you know, MWE participation is a significant priority of New York City Public schools.
2:32:33
In an extension, we will attempt to pursue some sort of MWBE subcontracting.
2:32:39
In the event that we do have the ability to rebid, we do have some strategies that we think will yield larger MWBE participation, including creating smaller aggregate classes so that Prime MWDE vendors could be awarded.
2:32:53
But again, that's in the realm of a rebid.
2:32:55
At present, we will be extending.
2:32:58
And again, any kind of extension also any changes to it will pend on whether vendors agreed to such changes.
