Council Member Rita Joseph inquires about plans for implementing cell phone tapping technology for student transportation. John Benson explains the current timeline and considerations for future OmniCard technology.
- The plan has always been to replace metro cards with OmniCards in year 1, followed by phasing in the application in year 2
- Physical OmniCards will never be fully phased out due to students who may not have access to cell phones
- The department is working with the MTA to discuss the next stages of the app rollout
- The timeline for implementing cell phone tapping is part of a phased approach, not a delay

We'll we'll do that offline.

What's the delay for the Omni contract to regards to cell phone tapping for students rights?
1:59:33
Is that something in the works?
John Benson
1:59:35
It's not a delay.
1:59:36
It's always been the plan to do Omni cards, replacing metro cards first in year 1, and then phase in the application in year too.
1:59:43
Okay.
1:59:44
On top of that, I would say the OmniCard itself is never going to fully go away.
1:59:48
You have students whose who can't whose families do not provide them with cell phones either due to personal preference or financial reasons.
1:59:55
There's always gonna have to be some level of Omni Cards.
