New York City schools are facing challenges due to the national bus driver shortage, which affects their ability to cover all necessary routes and provide backup drivers when needed.
- NYC is currently short about 300 bus drivers
- The shortage means there are not enough backup drivers to cover when drivers call out sick
- There are also not enough drivers to add new bus routes when needed
- While NYC has not been hit as hard as other school districts across the country, the shortage still significantly impacts operations
- This shortage contributes to the difficulty in maintaining and expanding bus services
