Council Member Rita Joseph inquires about recent trends showing an increase in students using bus services while the number of routes has decreased. DOE officials clarify the current situation and explain changes over time.
- There has been a recent influx of students, with 6,600 added so far this month, more than usual
- Contrary to past trends, the number of routes has actually increased this year to accommodate the influx
- The average number of students per route has decreased from 15 to 10 over the past 6-7 years, due to factors like limited travel time requirements and distance considerations

Thank you.
2:14:15
Recently, on the mayor's management report, the number of students utilizing bus services has increased while the numbers routes have decreased.
2:14:22
Can you elaborate on that a little bit more for us?
Glenn Risbrook
2:14:32
This has I'm sorry.
2:14:34
This has been true in the past school year.
2:14:39
We we did experience an influx influx of students this particular year, just to give you an idea.
2:14:46
Usually, at the end of the the school year for a curve to school population, we add between 7 to 10,000 students every year, maybe as many as 12 on some heavy years, we actually added 6600 students so far this month.
2:15:02
So there's been an influx of students this particular school year,
Rita Joseph
2:15:06
which are routes have to and decrease.
Glenn Risbrook
2:15:09
Actually, that's been true over the past years, but the routes have actually increased this year.
Rita Joseph
2:15:13
They increased versus decreased
Glenn Risbrook
2:15:15
increased this year.
Rita Joseph
2:15:17
Does this affect the quality of service?
2:15:19
Has the number of students per route increase and has the increased amount?
2:15:22
How much time we talked about that, how much time now that it requires for students to be on a route?
Glenn Risbrook
2:15:27
Well, again, we're talking about again, I have current school students, so therefore, I can't give you exact average time.
2:15:34
But I will say to you that the actual amount of students has even though overall they're going up, the the amount of students per route has gone down.
2:15:44
So we've been adding more routes, but the amount of students in each route has gone down to 10.
Rita Joseph
2:15:49
Is that just for this school year?
Glenn Risbrook
2:15:50
No.
2:15:51
Over over the past few years, it's been going down.
2:15:55
6, 7 years ago, we had about 15 students per route for curb to school.
2:16:00
Now we're down to about 10.
2:16:01
A lot of that has to do with limited time travel, other has to do with distances.
2:16:06
That the the children were right.
