Commissioner Raj Rampershad expresses significant concerns about the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) provisions in the mayor's City of Yes housing proposal. He outlines several practical and regulatory challenges associated with implementing ADUs.

  • Rampershad questions the process for filing ADU plans with the Department of Buildings
  • He raises concerns about building codes, regulations, and safety issues for ADUs
  • The commissioner highlights potential problems with side yard requirements and parking waivers
  • Rampershad suggests the council should review these sections of the proposal

I had main issues with the ADUs.
0:12:06
I work an architectural firm.
0:12:07
And when we practice, we file jobs.
0:12:09
And one of the big issues I had was, how is someone gonna create an ADU in their backyard?
0:12:15
How do you file this billing department?
0:12:17
What regulate what code regulations are gonna be implemented?
0:12:20
Besides areas that are prone to flooding, which I know they're not supposed to be in those areas, but I had concern about the cost to the to the homeowner, the tax implications, the cold use, like I said.
0:12:33
And, you know, I I also had issues with the side yards or the yard requirements because you have a reduction in the waiver of parking.
0:12:41
So those I know in Queens, especially, I I have a 2 family house, but I still need my car.
0:12:48
I need need to be able to park.
0:12:50
I understand that this relaxes the zoning regulations to wave parking.
0:12:55
I get that.
0:12:56
And with the side yards, to me, at the eliminating side yards from, say, 8 to 5 to 5 feet, I think it's kinda not something I agree with, and I know I was kind of vocal in internally by when we had these meetings.
0:13:10
I always would ask them to give me a brief, you know, updates of what changes may may be happening.
0:13:15
That's why during my my voting, I had asked for requested if counsel can look at these sections of law, but the ADUs with the I think I should have it here.
0:13:25
Sorry.
0:13:25
I wrote it down.
0:13:26
So ADUs, the Yarbough Primus, and actually the parking restrictions because I do feel that parking should still be required in my personal opinion.
0:13:38
And I feel it leads to better, especially in Queens.
0:13:43
As I know in Queens, a lot of the residents were very vocal during our 13 hour, like, 14 hour hearing that we had.
